Safety & Usage Guide for Alumina Crucibles
This guide explains how to use Labmina high-purity alumina crucibles safely and get the longest life from them. Our crucibles are fired at 1800°C and rated for a working temperature of 1600°C. Please follow these instructions — the most common cause of breakage is heating or cooling too fast, or removing the crucible directly from a hot furnace.
⚠ Important
Follow the instructions — do not heat with an open flame. Change temperature at roughly 4°C per minute; heating or cooling too fast, or pulling the product straight out of the furnace, will crack it.
What this guide applies to
These instructions apply to Labmina 99% high-purity alumina products — crucibles, boats, substrates, covers and custom parts. The temperature ratings (firing 1800°C, working 1600°C) and the heating/cooling rules are the same across the range. Zirconia and other materials have different limits; if you use those, ask us for their specific ratings.
Temperature ratings
Firing temperature: 1800°C. Maximum working temperature: 1600°C. Do not exceed the working temperature or hold near it longer than necessary — alumina creeps and deforms close to its limit.
Before first use: dry the crucible
Before the first use, place the crucible in an oven at about 105°C for 120 minutes to remove moisture. Trapped moisture can flash to steam on heat-up and crack the crucible.
Heating & cooling rates
Control the ramp rate carefully — this is the single most important rule:
- Below 1200°C: change temperature at less than 5°C per minute.
- Above 1200°C: change temperature at less than 4°C per minute.
- When cooling, reduce temperature under controlled power. Do not simply cut the power at high temperature — the early, fast cooling phase as the furnace cools can crack the product.
Do not use an open flame
Do not heat the crucible directly with a petrol/gasoline torch, acetylene torch or alcohol burner. Direct-flame heating is uneven and will cause the product to crack from thermal stress. Use a furnace that heats the crucible evenly.
Keep clearance from heating elements
Keep the product at least 5cm away from heating elements such as carbon (graphite) tubes, silicon-molybdenum (MoSi₂) rods or heating wire. Too close to a direct radiant source causes uneven heating and local overheating.
Support large crucibles on alumina feet
Large crucibles should not sit directly on the furnace hearth. Raise them on alumina (corundum) feet or similar refractory supports so air can circulate underneath. This even airflow reduces thermal gradients and extends the crucible’s life.
Storage & handling
Between uses, store products clean, completely dry and padded, separated so they cannot knock together and chip — ideally in their original packaging or a padded tray. Dry thoroughly before storing, because trapped moisture can flash to steam on the next heat-up and crack the product. When moving a crucible, support it with matched tongs and never lift a full, hot crucible with improvised tools. Inspect for cracks before every use — catching a flaw before heating saves a ruined run.
Personal safety
The crucible material is safe within its ratings, but high-temperature furnace work and any molten contents carry real hazards. Take these precautions:
- Wear PPE: heat-resistant gloves, a face shield or safety glasses, and appropriate clothing — surfaces and contents stay dangerously hot long after power-off.
- Ventilate: work with adequate ventilation or a fume hood; some samples and fluxes release hazardous fumes when heated.
- Keep everything dry: moisture on tools or material near molten contents can cause a violent steam ejection.
- Let it cool properly: never grab a crucible straight from the furnace; allow controlled cooling and use the right tongs.
- If a crucible cracks during a run, shut off and let the furnace cool fully before removing debris — never intervene at temperature. Wear gloves and eye protection when cleaning up.
Troubleshooting
If something goes wrong, this table maps the symptom to the likely cause and the fix.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix / prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked on heat-up | Ramped too fast, or trapped moisture | Dry at 105°C/120 min; ramp <5°C/min (<4 above 1200°C) |
| Cracked on cooling | Pulled from furnace / power cut too fast | Cool under controlled power; leave it in the furnace |
| Slumped / glazed | Exceeded ~1600°C working limit | Stay below the rating; use zirconia if you need more |
| Corroded / pitted | Alkali flux or incompatible chemistry | Don’t run alkali fluxes in alumina — use zirconia/Pt |
| Uneven heating / local damage | Too close to a heating element | Keep >5cm from elements; raise on feet |
| Contaminated sample | Residue build-up or wrong purity grade | Re-fire to clean; use 99%+ for analytical work |
